During your root canal procedure, Dr. Eaton or Dr. Smith will use a combination of anesthesia and a gentle touch to ensure your comfort. If an infection is present, then root canal therapy may take some additional time to complete.
When a dental cavity is not treated, it advances deep inside the tooth, infecting the pulp tissue. The contaminated pulp may cause pain and even affect the bone supporting the tooth’s root. Root canal treatment can help stop the infection and preserve the tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted.
Root canal treatment is also known as endodontic treatment or root canal therapy. It is a procedure that involves removing the infected nerve tissue from the tooth and replacing it with a filling.
At Valley Dental, our team of experts, including Dr. Eaton and Dr. Smith, are highly-skilled and use advanced technology to deliver easier and more comfortable root canal procedures. We offer comprehensive treatment to both children and adults.
The signs that point to the necessity of this treatment include:
The root canal procedure is done in steps and will involve two or more visits to our clinic.
During the first visit, anesthesia is administered to the affected tooth. Once the area around the tooth is numb, the dentist drills a hole through its crown to reach the pulp chamber. The infected pulp is removed, and if there is any abscess, it’s drained.
After the pulp removal, the root canal is disinfected and properly cleaned using special files. Then, a temporary filling is put in, and the tooth is allowed to settle.
On the second visit, the tooth is permanently filled with a soft, rubber-like compound to cover the space left by the pulp. Next, a dental crown is placed over the tooth to protect it from further damage or reinfections.
Once the entire procedure is done, take antibiotics as advised by the dentists to help prevent soreness. Eat soft meals and maintain good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly. Also, consume sugary foods in moderation. With proper care, the treated tooth can last a lifetime.
